Crescent University Abeokuta, one of the foremost private universities in Ogun State has launched an online site for the publication of news, articles, opinions, videos, and other publishable content generated majorly by students of the prestigious university.

The website was launched by students of the Mass Communication Department, with the main aim of equipping them with the requisite to function in the world of media technology.

Dr Kola Adesina

Speaking during the launch, the Head of the Mass Communication Department of the institution, Dr. Kola Adesina stated that the vision of the online news site is to enhance media practice with a  view to encourage students of the Department to be abreast of the latest developments in online research and reporting through the use of social media platforms to widen their horizons with knowledge of analyzing the developments in technology and its continuing global impact.

Adesina said the Department of Mass Communication would continue to embark on projects and programs that would distinguish the school among others as well as make it a force to reckon with in the world of media and digital technology in relation to news reportage and broadcast productions.

The lecturer in charge of Information Technology and Media Practice in the Mass Communication Department who also doubles as the supervisor of the project, Mr. Jamiu Folarin urged the students of the Department to come up with creative ideas, news reports, articles, and other broadcast productions that would make the site vibrant and a reference point in the world of digital technology.

“As we teach students both theory and practical aspects of newspaper, radio, television, and film productions as well as book publishing, there is the need to educate them on how to publish content online”

“This world has changed. Everybody wants to enjoy media content with just a click on their phones. That’s why students must be well trained on how best to benefit from the opportunities provided by digital transformation,” the Lecturer said.

He added that the news site would avail students of the needed knowledge to become online content creators, even before graduation, adding that any journalist that could not generate content for online media is not likely to function in today’s media practice.

The news site is expected to engage in fact-checking, solution journalism, community journalism, and other areas of media practice.
