Beekeping is one of the high risk activities in agriculture. Beekeepers are exposed to physical difficulties such as environmental conditions, stress, bee venom and smoke. As a result of these factors fatigue, distractibility, psychological disorders, injuries and occupational accidents may occur. In the literature related to beekeeping activities, no research has been done on beekeepers’ health and risk factors.
The aim of the present study is to identify the risk factors related to beekeepers’ health and provide necessary suggestions. Also it was planned to contribute to provide basis for occupational health and safety in beekeeping activities in Turkey. Material- method: Agricultural activities pose high risk working environments. Risk factors related to beekeeping activities may be evaluated under 3 categories based on the beekeeper, environmental factors and beekeeping activities.
Findings: Education level is vital in correct and fast decision making. Research has revealed that educational level of people working in beekeeping activities is in general low throughout the country. Risks that beekeepers are most exposed to are the environmental factors. Our beekeepers, during the production activities, spend long periods away from water resources, electricity, food protection and social life. It is themselves who need to take action in the case of an emergency health problem. Depending on the bee colony size, rate of exposure to bee venom and propolis would increase.
Wrong practices regarding disease control within the bee hive lead to decreases in bee immunity and most importantly human health problems. Results: Beekeeping is a production model in which beekeepers work day and night. Their health is under risk during production. Unfavorable health conditions would definitely lead to economic losses.
The beekeepers should take sufficent rest following a high work load and they should make their work plans such that the workload would not have negative effects on their health. An 8,000-year-old cave painting, discovered in Spain in 1924, depicts a man gathering honey from a beehive.

Bee venom is given as a shot for bee sting allergy. It is also used for osteoarthritis, Parkinson disease, multiple sclerosis (MS),nerve pain, and other conditions, but there is no good scientific evidence to support these uses.
A lot of other bee venom collectors are internal devices, where theu put it into the bee hive. Venom is used in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and medical research into dementia, HIV and arthritis.
