In a global society where chronic diseases are
becoming rapid, it is expedient for us regardless
of our levels in the society to carefully observe
healthy living thoroughly. I have come to
discover that not all “illness” needs the attention
of the medical doctors from my analytical
/observation and years of readings. It should not
surprise you that some of the medical
practitioners especially doctors often do across
examination of one’s diet, exercise, etc.
precisely for the pregnant women, children to
mention but a few.
Knowledge of Good Food
You can’t be healthy if you consistently eat
unhealthy food. For maximum health,
vegetables, fruits and whole grains should be
approximately 75 percent of your intake at each
meal. ( Noah B Brown, 2013) Meat or a meat substitute can provide the rest, but choose lean cuts of meat such as skinless poultry and sirloin,or fish, such as salmon and tuna. Consume meatless meals comprised of beans or soy products to substitute red meat. Reduce your intake of processed foods and reduce portions for better weight control. Finally, limit sugar, salt and fried foods.
Knowledge of Weight:
Managing your weight is the key to attaining all
of the health benefits of a Healthy Lifestyle. A
weight reduction of just 10 percent will
significantly reduce risk of heart disease and
o t h e r o b e si t y – r e l a t e d i l l n e s s e s.
Obesity/overweight is the secoleading
contributing factor to many childhood diseases
such as orthopedic disorders, sleep apnea, type
II diabetes mellitus, asthma, high blood
pressure and cholesterol, skin disorders,
emotional and psychosocial problems and many more.
Knowledge of Exercise:
Although drugs alone can often bring cholesterol
down to normal levels, diet and exercise provide
benefits that drugs don’t. They’ll lower blood
pressure, reduce weight, and lower the risk of
developing diabetes. A sedentary lifestyle is a
dangerous risk factor for disease. Exercise and a
healthy diet helps the body use insulin more
efficiently and can help control, alleviate and
prevent many diseases. Exercise, cessation of tobacco consumption, eating a high-fiber, lowfat diet, controlling body weight, and learning to
cope with stress, reduce the risk of heart disease.
Knowledge of Wellness:
Wellness is about being comfortable in your
space: your body, your attitude, and your
environment. A healthy lifestyle can greatly
increase a person’s longevity. And even though
catching something contagious like a cold or flu
is sometimes unavoidable, having the wisdom
that feeling healthy is a better way to live should
have you asking yourself why you are not taking action to live each day as beneficially as
possible. The issue with a lot of people
nowadays is that they are so busy working and/or taking care of everyone around them, that theyneglect their own health and wellness. Make
sure your heart is healthy and your bones are
strong and Keep it that way to see the benefits of
a healthy lifestyle.
Knowledge of Physiological Difference:
Understand that the nature of your body in terms
of its physiological is quite difference from your
folks, siblings and even parents in some cases. In developing countries like Nigeria, folks in most
case compare themselves with others. This
erroneous belief had and still making many
individuals in the society to become victims of
health issues such as cancer, tuberculosis,
among others. To buttress this, the Vice
Chancellor, Prof. Gbajabiamila, “some body’s
view might be I know somebody who smokes
100 cigarettes and he is 100 years old…How can
you said that cigarette causes cancer? But we
know that the chance of getting cancer is high,
scientifically.”
In nutshell, it is germane for the public to
inculcate the habits of observing adequate
healthy living so as to live a comfortable life now
and during the aging period. Meanwhile, your
well-being is often attributed to one’s level of
health knowledge. The best way to ensure good
health is by taking care of one’s self and
understanding the composition of one’s body
with potential rewards are great-preventing
premature death, unnecessary illness, and
disability, controlling health care cost, and
maintaining a high quality of life into old age.
