The Vice Chancellor of Crescent University, Abeokuta, Professor Ibraheem Gbajabiamila, has called for increased support from parents as the institution strives to maintain its commitment to delivering quality tertiary education amidst economic challenges.
Speaking at the 20th Matriculation Ceremony held on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at the Bola Ajibola Auditorium, Professor Gbajabiamila revealed that the university’s operational costs have skyrocketed due to rising electricity tariffs.
“Our monthly electricity bill, which used to be average of N800,000, has increased to N9 million when the institution was placed on Band A, but jumped to N21 million as of December 2024. This has placed strain on the university’s finances,” he explained.
He urged parents to ensure the prompt payment of tuition fees to enable the institution to sustain its high standards of academic and infrastructural excellence.
Highlighting the university’s academic achievements, the Vice Chancellor announced that all programmes offered by Crescent University have been accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and relevant professional bodies.
He added that some courses, such as Law and Nursing, are now oversubscribed, leading to the rejection of applicants once the institution reaches its carrying capacity.
“We’ve had to turn back candidates despite their eligibility. For instance, our Law programme could only admit 70 students, while Nursing had to limit admissions to 150, despite demand far exceeding these numbers,” he said.
The Vice Chancellor also commended parents for their investment in their children’s education, noting that such sacrifices contribute to the students’ success.
Despite the financial challenges, he reaffirmed the university’s dedication to providing a conducive learning environment for academic and personal development.
