In the rural community of Oguntedo, Ilaro, accessing clean water was a daily struggle for residents. The community’s only source of water was a polluted stream, which often dried up during the dry season. However, through a community-led initiative, Oguntedo has transformed its water landscape, providing a model for sustainable water management.
Before the initiative, residents of Oguntedo relied on the contaminated stream for drinking, cooking, and other domestic purposes. This led to frequent outbreaks of waterborne diseases, such as cholera and diarrhea. The community’s women and children bore the brunt of the problem, spending hours daily fetching water from distant locations.
In 2018, a group of concerned community members, led by the Oguntedo Community Development Association (OCDA), came together to address the water crisis. They partnered with a local non-governmental organization (NGO), the Ogun State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA), and the Ogun State Government to develop a comprehensive water management plan.
Construction of a borehole: A solar-powered borehole was drilled to provide a reliable source of clean water.
Water treatment and storage: A water treatment plant was built to purify the water, and storage tanks were installed to ensure a steady supply. Community-led management: The OCDA was trained to manage and maintain the water facility, ensuring its sustainability.
Public awareness and education: The community was educated on proper water handling, hygiene, and sanitation practices.
Since the implementation of the water initiative;
Waterborne diseases have decreased significantly. According to the Ogun State Ministry of Health, cases of cholera and diarrhea have reduced by over 70% in Oguntedo.
Water accessibility has improved: The borehole and water treatment plant have increased access to clean water, reducing the distance and time spent fetching water.
Community engagement and ownership: The OCDA’s management of the water facility has fostered a sense of community ownership and responsibility.
