Government Expenditure on Education in the South West (2024)

From January 1 to December 31, 2024, the Nigerian government allocated significant funds to the education sector in the South-West region. This investment is part of the broader national strategy to improve educational infrastructure, resources, and access across the federation.

 

Education remains a crucial pillar in national development. Based on data from govspend.ng, the South-West received substantial funding to support various educational initiatives. Below is a state-by-state breakdown:

 

LAGOS STATE

Amount Spent: ₦368,796,652

Purpose: Construction of schools and educational facilities, provision of teaching materials (including books and digital tools), teachers’ welfare, and support for scholarships, grants, and public-private partnership (PPP) programs.

 

OGUN STATE

Date: February 27, 2024

Amount Spent: ₦253,944,817

Purpose: Investment in the Federal College of Education, including infrastructure development, procurement of equipment and learning resources, faculty recruitment and training, program development, and general educational project costs.

 

ONDO STATE

Date: June 15, 2024

Amount Spent: ₦385,213,413

Purpose: Expansion of federal educational programs covering infrastructure upgrades, educational materials, recruitment of teaching staff, establishment of new programs, and provision of scholarships or subsidies to enhance educational access.

 

OYO STATE

Date: June 15, 2024

Amount Spent: ₦402,233,023

Purpose: Funding the expansion of the Federal College of Education in Oyo. The funds were allocated for infrastructure development, acquisition of academic resources, staff capacity building, student welfare programs, and community outreach initiatives.

 

OSUN STATE

Date: September 27, 2024

Amount Spent: ₦49,783,304.40

Purpose: Expansion of the Federal College of Education in Iwo. Projects included building hostel and recreational facilities, supplying academic equipment, staff support and training, as well as installation of essential utilities such as electricity, water, and ICT infrastructure.

 

Conclusion

The South-West region of Nigeria has benefited from strategic investments in education by the federal government in 2024. These expenditures demonstrate a commitment to educational development and the recognition of education as a vital tool for national progress and youth empowerment.
