Youth unemployment remains a major challenge in Nigeria, with many graduates struggling to find stable jobs. In response, the Ogun State Government established the Ogun Tech Hub to equip young people with digital skills that improve their chances of employment and entrepreneurship.
The programme trains participants in areas such as web development, software engineering, UI/UX design, digital marketing, and data analysis. Rather than focusing only on academic qualifications, it provides practical skills that match the growing demand for digital talent in today’s labour market.
From the phase of the society and job seeking individuals, the programme should be assessed using measurable outcomes rather than promises. Indicators such as enrolment, graduation rates, job placements, freelance opportunities, business creation, and income growth help determine whether the initiative is making a real difference. Early observations suggest that many beneficiaries have secured internships, remote jobs, freelance contracts, or launched their own tech businesses after completing the training.
Despite these achievements, several challenges remain. The programme currently reaches only a small number of youths compared to the thousands seeking employment each year. Access is also more difficult for young people in rural communities due to transportation and accommodation costs. In addition, greater transparency is needed through the regular publication of data on participant outcomes, employment rates, and programme impact.
Expanding the programme, improving access for rural communities, strengthening partnerships with private technology companies, and publishing performance data would increase its effectiveness and public confidence.
The Ogun Tech Hub demonstrates that targeted digital skills training can improve employment opportunities for young people. While more work is needed to expand its reach and strengthen accountability, the initiative offers a practical example of how government-led solutions can help address youth unemployment in Ogun State.
