Twitter Suspension: ECOWAS Court Stops Federal Government from Sanctioning Twitter Users

Twitter was banned by the federal government of Nigeria thon  the 17 of June 2021.

ECOWAS Court of justice has retrain the Nigeria Federal Government from  imposing  sanctions  or harassment, arresting  and  prosecuting twitter and any other social media service providers as well as media houses.

The media houses bring to the hearing and challenging the government on suspension.

The ECOWAS Court gave order to the Nigeria government to reversed the suspension after hearing the argument from the concern Nigerians.

Femi Falana and Mona Shirea who is a lawyer to the government include  that any interference with twitter is viewed as interferences with human right and that will violate human right. According to the section 39 of the 1999 constitution the people have the freedom of right to use twitter and express themselves.

Moreover the ECOWAS hereby gave order that the Nigeria federal government must take immediate actions and steps to comprehend the order.

Therefore after the order given to the government. The Federal Government says it would restore Twitter operations in Nigeria if the platform would be used responsibly by the citizens. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama disclosed this after a meeting with some of the top envoys of various Diplomatic Missions in Nigeria. Envoys present at the meeting which held at the office of the Minister of Foreign Affairs in Abuja included, those of Canada, the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and the Republic of Ireland. Onyeama said the government acknowledges the roles social media plays and how it swings positively and negatively. He further stressed that the negative aspect has dire consequences and can threaten the unity of the country.

176 and more concern Nigerians argued that the suspension of the twitter was illegal because of the people using VPN which can lead to illegal crime rate, cyber bullying and it is not applicable to people. It is better to use twitter openly rather than using VPN.
