The requirements for getting admitted into a Nigerian university or polytechnic are usually based on credit passes in four or five relevant subjects including Maths and English and reaching the stipulated cut-off mark. What this means is that, for a student to become eligible for admission, he or she must have gotten credit passes in O-Level subjects related to his or her preferred course of study and that includes Maths and English.
Also, they must get the cut-off mark that JAMB has stipulated for that university and the course of study. Only when these conditions are met then a candidate become eligible for admission.
The setting of admission requirements is important. This is because a lot of students use crude means to bypass the hurdle of OLevel exams. In order not to grant admission to unqualified candidates while ensuring there is enough room for qualified prospects, these admission requirements process is quintessential.
In conclusion It is evident from the points shared about the importance of JAMB in Nigeria that they hold a strategic and decisive position in the educational sector. Since many dread the idea of writing either of UTME or DE examinations, it is a crucial requirement that has helped keep the delicate balance of the nation’s educational system.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is in Nigeria what the Universities Central Council on Admissions (UCCA) has been in England UK since the 1950s. JAMB was established to be the clearing house for universities, polytechnics and colleges of education admissions applications in Nigeria. Its establishment was to manage tertiary institutions’ admissions in a manner that prevents some few individuals securing multiple admissions in several institutions at the same time, while thousands are left with no admission.
JAMB in my opinion has more benefits for the young candidates seeking admission into tertiary institutions, with the policy of one person one admission only.
There is an urgent need to expand and improve the capacities of existing universities rather than licensing and building more mushroom universities. JAMB will be more useful if the universities are expanded to cope with the increasing number of citizens and others seeking admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions yearly. Certainly JAMB’s importance is not overemphasized. Rather, I will say that JAMB’s importance in grossly underemphasized and misunderstood.
LAWAL MUTIU ALANI
University Administrator Crescent University ABEOKUTA, Ogun State Without mincing word, Jamb importance has been over emphasized. JAMB was created initially to admit students to Federal Universities. But later the State Government Universities were established and they are admitting students for them. Later when the Private Universities were established, they were in charge of admitting students for them based on their scores and the national minimum score.
But they have aggravated the relevance of the JAMB to the extent that they are virtually taking over Senate responsibility in Universities. They determine if students could study in higher institutions. They also nearly made impossible the transfer of students to another university which is a normal thing for intra University transfer.
The country has lost many viable students to the neighbouring countries like Benin Republic and Ghana because of their rigid policy.
My recommendation is that since students are expected to study abroad without any JAMB and they do their NYSC successfully. Students should also be allowed to get admission into private university without any JAMB and the university will do proper reconciliation of the students admitted with JAMB. This will reduce student brain drain to nearby countries and majority of students denial of admission due to JAMB will secure admission easily and will increase human capital in the country.
“I will agree that the importance of JAMB is over emphasized”.

“My point of view in this aspect is that yes Jamb is over emphasized not only that it’s the cheapest exam been written, but its also the easiest to fail due to their style of marking .
First of all why will a body determine the next further step a student is to take? Why can’t one just apply to a university, go for interviews or possibly pre-university qualifications exam like the white men do?
For example, a student passes both WEAC & NECO then just because he or she wasn’t able to make a certain cut of point, the student is therefore tied up in a situation of either deciding to wait for another jamb or do change of course which attract extra expenses.
Secondly it’s not everyone that’s very fast in assembling and micromanaging time just to prove a point that one can be able to solve multiple choices that include heavy calculations for just few timing.
Thirdly it’s also an avenue for easy malpractice I prefer the Post UTME to the jamb cause unlike jamb the malpractice is less.
The major importance of jamb to me is just to be matriculated into the university system as one who enrolled to jamb for future references and for NYSC purpose.

Jamb importance is overemphasised because as a student having to write the exam multiple times if you are not lucky to get admission that year is stressful and depressing.
Why is there a system you must go through before you gain admission into university? Once you graduated from secondary school, university education should be the next. Even as a student, writing multiple exams is stressful and depressing.
