A corporal punishment or a physical punishment is a punishment which is intended to cause
physical pain to a person. When it is inflicted on minors, especially in home and school
settings, its methods may include spanking or paddling.
The writer submitted that most of the notable individuals who had achieved or become
successful in their various careers was as a result of the beating they had received in their
school days.
The writer while reacting to the trended video of a female teacher beating a 3- year old
student for not learning what was being taught described beating as a brain resetting
instrument.
He cited Oyewole brothers in their biography spoke of how Rev. Kuti came to be called
Daodu – because of his cane. You couldn’t pass through Abeokuta Grammar School and not
be flogged by Kuti. It is not possible. Oyewole told of an occasion when even when he came
first position in class he was still flogged because he shook Kuti’s hand with ink splashing on his hands.
The death of an SS3 student of a public school in Ogun State, reportedly caused by corporal
punishment during the last academic session elicited attracted reactions from different
quarters.

A research conducted by Harvard Graduate School of Education concluded that spanking

found to impact children’s brain response, leading to lasting consequences.
According to Cuartas, When parents or teachers use spanking, it doesn’t lead to the desired
outcomes in discipline or teach children how to regulate their emotions.
“We know there are
better techniques, like positive discipline, that are more effective,
”
A psychologist, Professor Rotimi Animasaun maintained that corporal punishment was an
age long practice that could trigger harmful psychological responses in pupils, especially
sadness, high level of inferiority complex and low self esteem.
The Don also observed that those who engaged in corporal punishment usually lacked the
ability to deal with their emotions, calling on the government and school owners to ensure
effective psychological checks in the recruitment of teachers.
Also, an educationalist and religious leader, the Reverend Father Christopher Jolaoso
recommended the principle of negative reinforcement as a tool for correction among
children, pointing out that corporal punishment was not an effective means of putting the
children in checks as it often resulted in injuries or avoidable deaths.
It is false statement to assume that Corporal punishment is the best tool to instill discipline.
