If anything in existence today is as deadly as nuclear weapons, then the closest you should think of is disinformation.

In a era where information is both abundant and easily accessible, the need for reliable journalism has never been more crucial. Against this backdrop, the recent Fact Checker and Digital Media Rights Workshop, jointly organised by Fact Check Africa and Brain Builders Youth Development Initiative, provided a platform for journalists, from seasoned professionals to budding student reporters, to interrogate the intricacies of navigating today’s media landscape.

The workshop kicked off with a thought-provoking discussion on the prevalence of misinformation, and my thoughts on the latent power of information is captured in this quotation I jotted in my note: “If anything in existence today is as deadly as nuclear weapons, then the closest you should think of is disinformation.”

This observation set the tone for the day’s proceedings with emphasis on the urgent need for vigilant fact-checking and verification practices in an age rife with “fake news”.

The session on Fact Checking exceeded my expectations, which revealed the alarming prevalence of misinformation in today’s media landscape. I came to understand that even content that appears trustworthy – whether news articles, text, images, or videos – can often be deceptive. Therefore, I made a firm commitment to diligently verify every piece of information I encounter online before accepting it as authentic.

Participants were treated to insights from seasoned practitioners in the field, who shared their experiences and expertise on discerning truth from falsehood in an increasingly digitised world. From identifying reliable sources to scrutinising viral content, attendees gained practical strategies for distinguishing credible information from misinformation.

During the discussion on Ethics and Professionalism, I was reminded of the valuable lessons imparted by Dr. Salami Oluwatoyin in MAS 319 (Issues in Nigerian Mass Media) and Mr. Folarin Jamiu in MAS 301 (Specialist Journalism and Publications). The insights gained from these courses complemented the workshop’s content which further enriched my understanding of ethical considerations in journalism.

One of the facilitators Damilola Fajinmi emphasised the importance of maintaining a delicate balance between serving the public interest and adhering to ethical standards, as he challenged attendees to critically evaluate their own practices and motivations as journalists.

A highlight of the workshop was the exploration of Nigeria’s Freedom of Information (FOI) Act, led by Mr. Micheal Olatubosun of Splash FM. The session focused on the complexities of accessing public information and the challenges faced in its implementation. Attendees gained a deeper understanding of the legal framework governing transparency and accountability in the country.

Reflecting on the wealth of knowledge and insights gained throughout the workshop, participants expressed a renewed sense of purpose and commitment to upholding the principles of responsible journalism. As one attendee aptly put it, “My mind is overflowing with new knowledge and insights”.

Looking ahead, the workshop served as a catalyst for action, inspiring attendees to take an active role in combating misinformation and promoting media literacy within their communities.

The workshop laid the groundwork for a more informed and resilient society as it fostered collaboration among budding journalists and equipped them with the tools and knowledge needed to navigate today’s complex media landscape.

The Fact Checker and Digital Media Rights Workshop really served as a forum for learning as I now armed with newfound insights and a shared commitment to journalistic excellence.

Participants left with a renewed determination to uphold the integrity of their profession and champion the cause of truth in an age of rampant misinformation.

If I were to summarise my experience at the FactCheck Africa wirkshop in one sentence, it would be that my mind has been enriched with a wealth of new knowledge and insights.

Moreover, to strive towards a better Nigeria, aligning with communities of conscientious fact-checkers or abstaining from propagating misinformation would undoubtedly be a commendable step forward.
