Claim: A viral post has been shared on Crescent University Abeokuta’s student Instagram page notifying students of the need for them to pay a sum of thirty-five thousand naira to have access to the hostel’s internet services.
Verdict: Misinformation, while it is true that the school’s management has recently installed Wi-Fi on the school campus, inclusive of the hostels, and students are to pay a certain amount to have unrestricted access to the internet services, there was no final official decision made on the amount to be paid by students.
Full Text: At the beginning of the 2022–2023 academic session, one of the new developments the school made was the installation of Hostel Connect internet service on campus and in student hostels. Following the installation of the Wi-Fi, on November 19, 2022, there was a viral post on all of Crescent University’s social media platforms showing a picture of a signed letter by the management stating that all students are required to pay a sum of thirty-five thousand Naira for the purpose of the service and that all students are expected to make this payment on or before November 25, 2022. This message led to a lot of controversy and arguments among students and parents.
Verification: As at the release of the information, the university’s assistant registrar, Mr. Lawal, was contacted, and he said “ I am on an official leave and did not sign any letter involving the WI FI” from his reply, it is understood that he was on official leave at that time and couldn’t sign such documents. which means that the message was released before final decisions were made.
Few days later, a WhatsApp message was sent by Bashir Ambi Mohammed on the university’s parent forum WhatsApp group stating that the fees mentioned by the chairman were not the final ones and the management needs to re-panel to match the stated fees.
Following the holiday break, a leaflet is distributed indicating that the hostel connect fee had been lowered to fourteen thousand naira (14,000) per semester and that there is a discount for the remainder of the current semester.
Conclusion: while it is true that the school’s management has recently installed Wi-Fi on the school campus inclusive of the hostels and students are to pay a certain amount to have unrestricted access to the internet services, there was no final official decision made on the amount to be paid by students. Therefore, the post was a misinformation.
