Students of STEM, educators, stakeholders in the field of science and especially high-schoolers gathered for the second edition of the Physics Day themed “Physics: The Community and Beyond”, on Thursday 8 June, 2023.
The “Physics Day” was organized by the Department of Physical Sciences under the College Of Natural and Applied Sciences (CONAS), Crescent University, Abeokuta and was held at the institution’s main auditorium. It was chaired by the National President of the Nigerian Institute of Physics, Associate Professor Joseph O. Coker FNIP.
The event was set up to promote the many areas which physics can be applied and dispel the misconceptions about Physics.
The first speaker, Dr. Bello S. Abioye; University of Ilorin, Kwara State highlighted the fundamental things that made physics an integral part of not just science but knowledge in entirety. Dr Abioye’s lecture titled “Physics of the Community: The Community of Physics” also identified the outstanding figures in physics: Einstein, Newton, Max Born, Thompson etc.s
“God is too divine for anyone to search for” said Dr Oloruntola Racheal Foluke, the second speaker from Lead City University, Ibadan, Oyo State. Carving out the title “From the Earth into Space: When and Where will Physicists discover God”. The lecturer broached physics from an investigative angle on what divinity pronounces. She however iterated that physics has nothing to do with divinity even though religious texts talk about it.
Students of the university also gave presentations on topics like; Gravity light, The Earth’s Atmosphere, Significance of Force in Physical Nature, James Webb Space Telescope and a recitation of a collection of Scientific Poems authored by G.A. Olaniyi.
A glowing highlight of the Physics Day was the physics quiz covering climate, ocean, Community and other aspects of physics. To uphold Late Judge Bola Ajibola, the founder of Crescent University’s dream of erasing gender imbalance in education, schools participating in the quiz were required to have a male and female representative.
It was an ardent competition which had to stretch into two laps with the first beingn multiple choice questions and the second being theoretical questions owing to ties. The first position of the quiz competition went to Master Abdullahi Jubril Taiwo of Taidob College and Miss Mustapha Muslimah of Blazer School.
All the schools present at the event got certificates of attendance and special prizes for punctuality, most well-behaved and best dressed.
