Imagine being a young woman, away from home, pursuing your dreams, but forced to confront a harsh reality every day. No water to bathe, no electricity to study, and male staff roaming freely in your hostel. Welcome to the world of female students at Crescent University, Abeokuta, where the pursuit of education is a daily battle for dignity and survival.

In a shocking revelation, students are speaking out about the deplorable conditions in the girls’ hostel, where basic amenities are luxury. “It’s like we’re not even human,” says a final-year student, who wishes to remain anonymous. “We go days without water, and when it finally comes, it’s not enough. We’re forced to wake up at 4 am to fetch water at times , and if we’re lucky, we get a trickle.”
But water is just the tip of the iceberg. The electricity situation is just as dire, with frequent power outages making it impossible for students to study or even charge their devices. “I’m writing this article by the light of my phone, because the power has been out for days,” says another student. “It’s frustrating, it’s demotivating, and it’s unfair.”

But perhaps the most disturbing aspect of this crisis is the lack of security and privacy for the female students. Male staff members are often seen roaming around the hostel , unchallenged, making the girls feel vulnerable and exposed. “It’s like we’re not even safe in our own rooms,” says a second-year student. “We’ve complained , but nothing seems to change.”
It’s time for our university administration to take responsibility and provide a safe and healthy environment for all students. We need reliable water and electricity, improved security, and a place where our girls can feel protected and supported.
Let’s stand together to support our girls at Crescent University.
